What is Yoga Therapy?

'Yoga Therapy is the use of Yoga where there is a specific health need or needs.'1

If you are reading this, it is likely that you are aware that yoga is an inherently therapeutic and transformative practise which calibrates and balances the body. There is now a growing body of medical research supporting the benefits which yogis have known for thousands of years2. This evidence-based research has led many doctors to recommend yoga as well as the NHS noting the positive impact yoga has on their staff.

How does it work?

Yoga therapy empowers the individual to apply yoga practices to create health. It works holistically to: improve physical and mental wellbeing; develop healthier lifestyles; alleviate pain; aid relaxation skills and threat various specific conditions. Aligning the specific needs of an individual with the practices of yoga to holistically enhance health. What to expect

The first session of yoga therapy will involve a discussion of your needs and objective and subjective analysis of your challenges. You work together with the yoga therapist to create a plan which suits you and is achievable within your lifestyle.

In the second session a plan is developed which usually involves an initial six-weeks - each session is sixty minutes long. You may be prescribed home practices with the aim that you become empowered to continue the practices at home for a sustained period of time.

The third session: will involve evaluation and possibly development of the programme. Yoga therapy has a person-centred, motivational approach and is designed to enable you to draw on your own innate healing faculties.

Sessions four, five and six: will strengthen the programme and possibly adapt it to take steps forward: depending on the person’s own pace.
